April Business Workshops

There will be a series of four small business workshops presented at the Ketchikan Career Transition Center (KCTC) in April. These presentations are designed with the entrepreneur in mind.

Starting Your Business
Thursday, April 8th, 1:00p.m. - This informative workshop is designed to assist the person who is either thinking about starting a business, or has started a business, in getting organized, finding information about financing, licenses, inventory control, financial controls, and other general information that the aspiring business person will find useful.
Marketing & Sales For Small Business
Thursday, April 5th, 1:00p.m. - No matter how superior your product or service may be, no matter how hard you work, you must have a plan to deliver your product or service to your customer. This workshop can help get you off to a good start.
Records and Bookkeeping For Small Business
Thursday, April 22nd, 1:00p.m. - If your business is going to survive, grow, and prosper, you must be in control of your records and finances. This workshop is a must for prospective or active businesspersons that have questions about financial and records maintenance for their business.
Purchasing a Small Business
Tuesday, April 29th, 1:00p.m. - Looking to buy a business? This workshop is designed to assist you in valuing, planning, and purchasing a small business. Also, what to ask, what to check, what to consider, and the mechanics of the transfer of ownership.

These workshops are presented by David Sharman, CBC, as a service of the Juneau Economic Development Council, in cooperation with your Ketchikan Career Transition Center, and funded through JTPA. The workshops are fast paced, informative and entertaining. There will be time allocated in each workshop to discuss your business and answer your questions.

All Ketchikan residents may attend the workshops at no charge. Individual business counseling is also available at no charge to eligible persons. Call David Sharman at (907) 247-7526 for an appointment or workshop information.

TRA Tax Information

Trade Readjustment Allowances (TRA benefits) are just like Unemployment Insurance benefits when it comes to filing your taxes. They are both taxable by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The amount paid to you has automatically been reported to the IRS.

When you file your income tax return, you must report 100% of the TRA benefits you receive. In January of each year, you will be sent a 1099 form showing the amount of Unemployment Insurance you received and the amount of TRA benefits you received during the prior year. This 1099 form is sent to the most current address on file with Unemployment Insurance. Please keep them informed of any address changes that you have in order to receive your 1099 form.

Warm Line Process Changes

If you are holding a staff person's business card with the warm line number on the back, the warm line process has been "changed". Counseling services are available at GATEWAY CENTER FOR HUMAN SERVICES, located at 3050 Fifth Avenue or telephone (907) 225-4135. Regular office hours Monday through Thursday are from 8A to 6P for walk-in appointments and on Friday's from 8A to 5P. If a client needs immediate help they can stop by the office.

The after hours Gateway telephone number (907) 225-5171 goes to Ketchikan General Hospital, who calls the on-call clinician. The clinician will then call clients and help them with their needs. Confidential counseling service is free of charge to dislocated workers and their immediate families.

Here are some examples of commonly encountered life stresses, all of which can be lessened by talking with a competent listener.

  • Stressful events causing extra strain.
  • Ongoing difficulties in personal relationships.
  • Family conflicts which feel overwhelming.
  • Emotions or behaviors may seem out-of-control.
  • Sleeping too much or too little.
  • Inability to concentrate.
  • Increase in physical maladies

The Gateway Center for Human Services provide mental health and substance abuse services for both adult and children twenty-four hours a day at NO CHARGE to dislocated workers and their immediate families.

Have You Heard?

In case you didn't know, here are some of the on-going changes which have occurred recently in good ol' Ketchikan:

After 25 years, The Grandma Shop has closed (we don't know what's taking its place); Jamie's Fast Photo in the Plaza closed its doors and Schallerer's took advantage by opening their second store in it's place; Oceanview Restaurant (wasn't that one of your favorite pizza places?) is expanding, as best it can, to add waiting room to the front of the restaurant and additional seating on the creek side of the building; Coastal Tire sold out to Shaub-Ellison Tire Company at 5 mile N. Tongass (it's unknown what's happening with the site across from the mill); Art's Mini-Mart has become Christie's Mini-Mart; Zales moved out but their stall has been busily occupied by vendors participating in special Plaza events;

Scott Habberstad is the new Director of Marketing for the Ketchikan Visitor's Bureau; Taquan Air has been busy, moving their maintenance crew from Peninsula Point to their hangars at the Ketchikan International Airport, moving Taquan Travel to the NBA building on Dock Street next to JR's, and closing down its Part 121 Air One operation after less than a year of service; Wal-Mart has secured building permits and appears to be a "go" at this time; the new Alaska Federal Credit Union building on Tongass is complete and compliments the surroundings with its detailed architecture; Elmo's (the business) sold out to Shear Magic, which relocated to the Plaza location, and Elmo's (the staff) joined forces to open a new salon in the old Lewis Chevrolet lot on Tongass (and it's busy!); Napa Service Auto expanded into the vacated Shear Magic space;

KRBD radio just wound up its spring fund raiser but in other public broadcasting news, it appears that funding for public TV in Alaska has been cut from the budget; the legislature has been haggling over whether or not Alaska will continue changing to daylight savings each spring; Northland Video closed up and remains empty.

We got a taste of life "down south" recently when an armed robber held up Captain's Keg and Petro Alaska's convenience store (at 7:30 at night!), reportedly holding up the cashier with two guns, then shot at police with both a flare gun and a 9mm while running from The Narrows Inn and down Shoreline drive-- but KPD got their man! Bank of America is slated to pull out of all its Alaskan locations (locally operating out of Carr's); construction is currently underway in the Plaza parking lot alongside Tongass avenue in order to redirect the flow of traffic; The Body Works building that was torn down has become a parking lot; Little Switzerland moved out of town but we haven't heard who may be taking over their space; and finally, someday you may get to try a "taste of home" after the new micro-brewery opens downtown!

Job Service Update

Web sites: The following web sites may be useful when searching for work.

Newspapers:

  • AJR News links in Oregon
  • Anchorage Daily News
  • Juneau Empire
  • The Seattle Times
  • Links to US newspapers

Job listings:

  • City and Borough of Juneau
  • Alyeska Pipeline

Unemployment Insurance Direct Deposit: Do you read all that paperwork mailed to you when you are filing for unemployment benefits? Just in case you missed the announcement, direct deposit is now available for your unemployment insurance checks. Direct Deposit is the electronic transfer of your unemployment insurance payment into your bank account. It is a safe, convenient, and fast way to receive your UI benefits. It eliminates mailing delays, checks lost or stolen, and eliminates standing in line to cash your check. You can sign up for direct deposit through the telephonic filing system called "VICTOR".

The Unemployment Insurance web page contains information on direct deposit, the UI claimant handbook, UI appeals, UI call centers (phone/fax numbers) and frequently asked questions at:

Day laborer: In the past a person wanting day labor (temporary) work had to report to the employment office, sign a list, and wait there for day labor jobs to be listed. These job openings now appear on Alaska's Job Bank under "day laborer" or "laborer" and include information on how to contact the employer. Alaska's Job Bank is accessed through the state of Alaska home page at: www.state.ak.us

Casual Labor: Are you aware that the City of Ketchikan will accept applications for temporary or seasonal general laborers? This work is usually short term/temporary for the Public Works Department and may involve working street maintenance, garbage collection, building maintenance (if you have carpentry skills), or at the landfill. If you are interested, apply with the City of Ketchikan, 334 Front Street.

Job listings are increasing daily as employers prepare for the busy summer season. If you are searching for work and have not been in the center recently, stop by and check that your work application is still active and contains a copy of your current resume.

Employment Consultant

Following Up

Going back to an employer for another try can demonstrate your interest in the company, your dedication to self-improvement (especially if you've fixed a problem area like weak interviewing skills), and perseverance.

Tips for following up with employers:

Make some revisions to your resume: "I'm dropping off my updated resume" gives you a wonderful excuse to contact an employer and gets your resume to the front of the pending file it will likely go into.

Call or go see ANY employer who actually told you to check back and remind them that you are following through with their instructions: "I'm checking back about that driving position as you asked me to do when we met last month…"

Attach cover letters stating you are still interested in the job or the company (say you're still interested, not that you're still unemployed!)

Inquire as to whether a lower level position may be available so that you may get your foot in the door until such time that a more suitable position becomes available.

Inquire about the possibility of volunteer positions for the same reason.

ALWAYS be professional, courteous and thank people for their time.

Lani Robb, Vocational Counselor
