SBA Services At KCTC

Do you know what it takes to succeed in small business? If you answered yes, congratulations, you're way ahead of the game. But, if you are like most entrepreneurs and those interested in starting their own business, you face this question every day.

KCTC, in cooperation with the Juneau Economic Development Council, offers dislocated KPC workers a variety of business assistance services, including weekly small business workshops, individual counseling, resource location and reference materials.

These services are delivered by David Sharman, Certified Business Counselor. If you would like to access the business assistance services or workshops, contact Dave at 247-7526

Picks From The Pumpkin Patch

L-P and Sealaska broke off joint venture talks the week of September 5th. The veneer plant is still in the planning process and has no definite start date at this time. *The new road to Ward Lake has been completed. South coast finished construction on the new road, named Revillagegado Road, some time in early June. The road starts right before the Ward Cove Post Office. The old Ward Lake road has been closed and no is longer accessible to the public. *Construction projects have been plentiful in and around Ketchikan this summer. The Saxman Village road project has been partially completed with Killer Whale Avenue, which runs in front of Saxman Totem Park, completely paved.

For those of you living out of town but still claiming residence here in Alaska, the Permanent fund total has been announced. This year's total was another record setter at $1,540.88. It is expected to rise higher again next year.

The Alaska Marine Highway had an addition to its Southeast fleet this year. The M/V KENNICOTT was put into service in early July. The new ferry has a double car deck so is able to carry more cars and people to and from our great City. On a sad note we said goodbye to a local boat that has been serving Ketchikan for some time now, the M/V MALASPINA. The *MAL* is now doing a day run between Juneau and Skagway.

Do Your Friends Know Where You Are?

As the holiday season approaches and people begin to review their Christmas card lists, the Transition Center staff wants to be as helpful as possible in making sure ex-mill workers are able to send greetings to their friends. The Transition Center staff will print the names and addresses of interested individuals in an upcoming newsletter when written permission is granted.

To get your information printed, send us a letter or postcard stating your permission to print whatever information you would like to disclose: name, address, phone number, fax number, email address-you name it! Our address is P.O. Box 6600, Ketchikan, Alaska. Hope to hear from you SOON.

Retirement: It's Your Future

When we worked at the mill we all had some sort of retirement plan. Now that most of us have moved on to other work, we might not have the same type of plan.

Experts who plan retirements for a living say you will need 80% of what you make now to live in the same way at 65. Lets face it you will not get that on Social Security.

So you need to set some goals. The more you save and the sooner you start the better off you will be. Become informed: learn all you can and talk to the people who know. It is never too soon or to late to start.

Good Bye, Doug!

Hello, from the Employment Service Staff. We would like to congratulate all who found jobs during my stay here since July. I know I can speak for all of the staff when I say it is very gratifying to see our friends and neighbors transition from being laid off to being employed and finding new and satisfying employment opportunities. Whether you went through retraining or straight into work search it is just as important to see it through to completion. It is truly a pleasure for me to be working with people I know and once worked with in my capacity.

I will be rotating back to my main office at the end of September. You will see my colleague Noni Woodruff here beginning October 1st. Though there probably will be a slow down in employment opportunities during the fall and winter seasons we expect to place more of you into gainful jobs. September 30th marks the end of employment for another small group of KPC employees. We would like to welcome you to our service center and look forward to working with you on a personal basis. Please take advantage of all the services available, and we'll do our absolute best to see that you find work you desire.

Thank you, Doug Giles

KCTC Grievance Policy

All non-program (TAA, JTPA) grievances will be resolved through the Grievance procedure established by the Transition Center Committee. If you have an issue that needs resolution, please fill out the information requested on the form and place the form in a sealed envelope.

Submit the sealed envelope to the receptionist. The receptionist will put this sealed envelope in the Committee's mail box. A Committee member will check the mail box daily and if an issue or issues have been submitted to be grieved then the Committee member in receipt will notify the other voting members of the Committee of the grievance.

You will receive a letter within a week letting you know the Committee is in receipt of your grievance. The three Committee members you select to hear your grievance will meet as soon as possible to do so. You will be notified, by mail, as soon as the Committee makes a decision in regard to your grievance.

The forms and envelopes can be pick-up at the front desk from the receptionist. Keep in mind that the center is here for you, the dislocated worker, and it is your job to make sure you receive the services you deserve.

Let New Chance be the window to your future!

Tax Break For Students

Students Hi everyone, just some information on the new tax laws concerning education deductions and a tax court decision regarding long distance travel to work.

There is a deduction for up to 60 months of interest paid on student loans. The most you can deduct in 1998 will be $1,000.00 and goes up to $2,500.00 in 2001. It can also be used for financing old and new loans.

The Hope Scholarship Tax Credit was also created by the new tax law. It is worth up to $1,500.00 per year. You also have up to $1,000.00 per year over the course of your lifetime tax credit for college education.

You can use these tax breaks to borrow for college expenses that qualify for education credit. You can deduct the interest paid on the loan. Ultimately, you get a tax credit AND a deduction for the same money! For those of you in school, be sure to ask your tax preparer about the new laws on education expenses.

In other tax news, a recent court case ruling determined that the IRS considers your place of WORK (rather than the location of your home) to be your "residence." In the case, a man took a teaching position in another town. He worked there Monday through Friday and returned home to his family each weekend. When he tried to deduct his expenses, the court ruled in favor of the IRS's assertion that to reside in a location away from one's full-time, permanent job is a preference therefore not deductible. Anyone considering a job on the pipeline, for example, who wishes to maintain a residence in Ketchikan is advised to check with a tax professional.

WE ARE NOT TAX EXPERTS: please check with a tax professional who can tell you how the above information applies to your individual circumstances.
