History
Through a private-public partnership between Ketchikan Pulp Company and the State of Alaska, Department of Community and Regional Affairs, Ketchikan Career Transition Center will now offer small business start-up counseling services.
The Department of Community and Regional Affairs staff was successful in securing Job Training and Partnership Act (JTPA) federal funds and State matching dollars to provide this needed assistance to pulp mill workers interested in starting their own business.
The Juneau Economic Development Council (JEDC) was awarded the grant from JTPA to open the SBDC for dislocated pulp mill workers. KPC is providing office space and supporting administrative assistance.

How Do I Find Out More About this Assistance?
First of all, you need to see your peer counselor who can quickly put you on the right track. Make sure to mention you are interested in starting your own business or want to expand your current business. He will make sure you get more information on this exciting program…. That’s it (except a little paper work).
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Do you provide Financing?
No. This service is to help people analyze their business idea, write a business plan, write a loan proposal (if necessary), and other start-up related issues. We will assist you in finding many sources of start-up financing options.
Do I have to write a business plan?
Yes. most banks require some type of business plan to underwrite your idea or service. Without a business plan, most lending institutions think you may not have thought out all of the details. Some lending institutions, like the Small Business Administration (SBA), require a business plan for a loan guarantee. The SBDC recommends strongly to make a comprehensive business plan not only for financing reasons, but to use as a strategic plan for the future.
What can I expect in a counseling session?
A business counselor will guide you through the process of starting your own business. He will not write a business plan for you or do your homework, but will assist you in finding the information needed to evaluate your idea. He will, upon request, review financial information, read and critique business plans, read and critique marketing plans, and other requests to help you get into business (if appropriate).
