Want To Be a Ferry Worker?

Mike Young of the Alaska Marine Highway System's Passenger Services Department visited Ketchikan last month to tell us all about becoming a Steward, how to submit and effective application and life aboard our State ferries. Here are some highlights from his workshop and some helpful hints about submitting an application:

  • Apply for your Z-card now since it takes lots of time to process your application
  • New Coast Guard safety requirements are in place for this year's hiring process which include:
    • Confirmation from your doctor that you can do the physical part of the job
    • Reading and understanding the English language at a 12th grade level
    • Passing an 8-day, unpaid training course (the employer pays for the course)
  • Explain any gaps in employment history on the application
  • List any training or certificates you have APPLIED FOR on the application
  • They strongly prefer that you submit the computerized version of the application
  • They are looking for people who:
    • Are willing to work hard
    • Will be well liked (by crew and passengers)
    • Will get along with their bunkmates
    • Will treat customers well and do it their jobs cheerfully
    • Are humble enough to do the worst of jobs
  • All meals are provided on the ship & kitchen will try to accommodate special diets
  • Federal law prohibits any alcohol consumption while onboard ship (at any time)
  • No smoking in crew quarters

Still interested? Applications are only taken once per year for this entry-level position so apply NOW. KCTC staff will assist you with the computerized application or other questions regarding this unique employment opportunity.
