This seven-session course introduces students to the Internet. Beginning with a basic overview of the structure of the Internet, students will be given hands-on instruction with Netscape Navigator on the PC. Electronic mail, bookmarking and using plug-ins will be discussed. Students will learn how to maximize their use of search engines, as well as manipulate elementary utilities such as FTP. Basic elements of Netiquette for Newbies will be covered. This course is for 'newbies' to the Internet as well as those who want to hone their surfing skills.

Course Objectives

Upon completion, students will:

1. Be able to utilize communications software to connect to the Internet.

2. Learn a variety of Internet language terms commonly used in this field.

3. Demonstrate their grasp of file manipulation utilities such as File Transfer Protocol, formatting attachments, and sending and receiving e-mail.

4. Know how to effectively use WWW search engines.

5. Have a basic understanding of Internet Netiquette including legal restrictions, property rights, security, copyright, and censorship.

6. Have a solid working knowledge of the Netscape Navigator utilities.

Student Evaluations

This is a PASS/FAIL course. To derive the most benefit from this class, students should plan to attend each of the six sessions, attend the Virtual Class once a week and e-mail exercises as assigned.

Materials

Students should bring diskettes for downloading and a small notebook. They should also have access outside of class to the Internet for homework assignments. As part of the learning experience students will be expected to use this Virtual Classroom. While there are no required texts, students might find the suggested bibliography helpful.
