CybrrCat PC Spring Cleaning Tips!
- Dump those cached Internet files! Works in both the MAC & PC environments:
In Netscape V1-3.2--go to OPTIONS>NETWORK>CACHE. The cache file is used to keep local copies of frequently accessed documents and reduce time connected online. Hit both the Clear memory and Clear Disk cache buttons.
- Dump those temp files! In PC Windows95 go to START>FIND> and enter*.tmp , then press search. When the files are listed in the window, click on EDIT>SELECT
ALL> and press DELETE.
- Release the power of Windows! On the PC in Win95 hold down CTR-ALT-DEL, then highlight and choose End Task for all tasks in the window except for systray & explorer. This releases the hold windows puts on the upper RAM (memory) and your open program will run much faster, such as a graphics application or spooling to a printer.
- Use it or stash it!
- If you haven't used an app or a file in the past 6 mos, back it up on a storage disk like Iomega's Zip or Jazz or, for smaller files, a 3.5" floppy. Be sure to label it; in a few months you won't remember what you put on that disk with the blank yellow label!
- Use UNINSTALL! to get rid of programs you don’t use any more or
stuff you have downloaded and then decided not to keep. Go to
START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL> and open ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS. Highlight the dead fish and press REMOVE.
- Invest in uninstall utilites like Quarterdeck’s Clean Sweep and Cybermedia’s
Uninstaller. See left for the how and where.
- Make a startup disk today! Here’s a must for every computer user of any skill level: Make and keep handy a Windows 95 startup disk. If you have hard drive problems, you can use the startup disk to get your machine running so you have the best chance of diagnosing and fixing your hard drive. To begin, open Control Panel and double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Once the Add/Remove
Programs Properties sheet appears, click the Startup Disk tab. Insert a blank high-density floppy disk into the floppy drive and create it.
- For advanced users: close windows and at the DOS prompt type cd c: then type dir /w. The screen will fill with all your directories. If there are any that you have deleted with uninstall but still show up here, type in: deltree [name of directory] and hit enter. Say *YES* at the prompt. And, eh, voila!
- Finally, run scan disk and defrag! START>PROGRMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS>SCAN DISK first, then Disk Defragmenter.
